Os aerossóis, tanto naturais como antropogénicos, desempenham um papel importante nas ciências atmosféricas e astronómicas. Afectam as ciências atmosféricas ao transmitir forçamento radiativo e perturbar o equilíbrio radiativo do sistema Terra-atmosfera, bem como ao degradar o ambiente. Para compreender os efeitos dos aerossóis nos nossos sistemas geo/biosfera, é essencial caraterizar as suas propriedades físicas, químicas e ópticas no maior número possível de locais, devido à natureza regional das suas propriedades e ao seu curto período de vida. Isto também ajudará a construir uma imagem abrangente da distribuição global dos aerossóis e também do seu potencial impacto ambiental. Como a maioria das fontes de aerossóis é de origem terrestre, a variabilidade das suas propriedades será muito grande perto da superfície. A altitudes mais elevadas, acima da região de mistura e na troposfera livre, as caraterísticas dos aerossóis têm uma perspetiva mais sinóptica, seriam indicativas do nível de fundo e são úteis para compreender o impacto a longo prazo. Estas medições sistemáticas de aerossóis a grandes altitudes são praticamente inexistentes na Índia.
