'An Outline of the History of Kożuchów,' by Tadeusz Szetela -.Translated by Frederic S. Topor( A story of determination, self-reliance, cooperation and faith)While the story of the parish church focuses on the virtue of Faith, the story of the village history also displays the values of hard work and perseverance that the immigrants brought with them to America. It is a testament to those and other values that Tadeusz Szetela, by his own admission a relatively uneducated member of the community, could author such a comprehensive account of the village’s history.Through narrative and over 80 photographs, this book tells the story of the burdens of indentured serfdom, legally outlawed in 1848 but not finally stamped out until the manor properties were parceled out in the early 1900’s. These 'parcels' were then made available for purchase by the poor families who lived and died on that land in which they worked in servitude for generations. They were finally able to attain the joys of liberty and land ownership but only through loans and contributions from their families who now lived and worked in America.
