林慰楨教授早年考取第七屆中英庚款，一九四零年與錢偉長、郭永懷、林家翹等同船前往加拿大留學。誰也沒有料想到，第七屆中英庚款奬學金化學專業得主林慰楨在麥基爾大學所選的博士專業名義上是化學，而實際是礦冶工程(Mining and Metallurgical Engineering)。誰也不會猜想到此時此刻對林慰楨「真正有價值的」東西並不是「學位」而是盡快地掌握如何從含鋁質高的礦石中提煉鋁、如何將鋁轉化成用於製造飛機的那種質輕而堅固的鋁合金(duralumin)。 他決意不惜一切代價，把西方從礦石中提煉鋁轉化成鋁合金的最先進的理論、技術和程序學到手，用鋁合金製造出自己的戰鬥機來扭轉抗戰因沒有制空權而造成的被動戰局。一九四二年獲得博士學位后，林慰楨參與、指導、設計了多項冶金提煉研製工作，經過多年不懈的實驗努力，終於研製出一種浸出壓力冶金提煉鎳的新方法並將此法推廣、應用到提煉其它稀有金屬種類。他所參與的諸多發明專利一直被世界礦業冶金業推崇，並被世界上（包括中國）許多礦業冶金業受權採納、應用於幾乎所有回收稀有金屬提煉程序中。 3
