L’Amérique précolombienne et coloniale traite des événements historiques qui se sont déroulés sur le continent américain. Il s’intéresse aux événements passés et à la manière dont différentes cultures ont cohabité dans une géographie vaste et diversifiée, inconnue des Européens jusqu’au XVe siècle. Il présente ainsi les cultures aztèque, maya et quechua, ainsi que les expériences des explorateurs et conquérants européens qui ont fait de l’Amérique leur centre névralgique, ce qui leur a valu une place de choix dans les pages de l’histoire universelle. Le texte comprend également des recherches sur des aspects scripturaux, tels que ceux développés par le poète Nezahualcóyotl, et Chilam Balam, une œuvre qui relate les événements historiques et les circonstances de la civilisation maya. De même, La Araucana d’Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga dépeint, à travers une épopée exemplaire, la guerre entre les Espagnols et les Indiens araucans lors de la conquête du Chili au XVIe siècle.
