In the 1930s, Paul Ben Baginsky, a member of the German Department faculty of Brooklyn College, was working on a book then called 'The Development of the Notion of America in Germany' when it was stopped by the lack of bibliographic data to work from. It became clear that no more progress could be made without more adequate bibliographical foundations, and that’s exactly what Baginsky set out to do.
