私たちの年代は現代日本史における激動の時代に育ちました。Pearl Harber に始まった第２次大戦の２年前に生まれ、太平洋戦争の敗戦の翌年小学校へ入学し、戦後の食糧難の時代に飢えを凌ぎ、受験地獄を経て、東京オリンピックの翌年に大学を卒業しました。大学在学中に安保闘争、卒業時に大学紛争、インターンボイコット、大学民主化と学閥支配への挫折を経験しました。私は５３人の医学部卒業生の中で唯一人米軍病院でインターンをし、その１２人のインターンの中で唯一人母校に戻れず、日本では将来はないと諦め、敗者復活戦の積りでアメリカに人生をかけました。したがって日本を出てから帰る気はありませんでした。アメリカではSt. Louis で病理レジデントを修了し、glass ceiling に遭遇し、州立カンサス大病院に２７年奉職後、テキサス州の市中病院に勤務してから西海岸のオレゴン州を最終の地に選びました。日本では病理は金とは無縁の基礎医学ですが、アメリカでは半分基礎医学また半分病理診断医として働き、貧乏に育った私にとって日本よりも良い環境でした。1970年代に私達がレジデントで渡米の際、日本からは毎年２０～３０人いましたが、2,000年に入りその数毎年数人の状態です。自然科学の一部である医学に国境があってはなりませんが学問に生きるか死ぬかは本人の努力次第です。先人としてもっと多くの日本の学徒が広く世界に進出することを願って、アメリカのヤブ医者生活を拙い自由詩でまとめてみました。日本では主に集団での生活を描き、アメリカでは個人と個人との触れ合いと、アメリカ中を車で走り回った記録を付け加えました。
