One foggy spring evening in 1946, a young college professor slips into a deserted campus building for a surreptitious meeting with her lover, only to be abruptly shot dead in the darkness. The dangers facing Jessica and James are intensified by Jessica’s friendship with a troubled veteran and his striking dark horse, as well as the presence on campus of an old flame of hers and his formidable wife, both of whom may be linked to a Nazi fifth columnist. The Nazi is only revealed amidst kidnapping, a conflagration, and a fatal gunfight, where the dark horse of the title proves a vital ally.
