Der orale Lichen planus (OLP) ist eine chronische entzündliche Erkrankung, die bei etwa 1-2 % der Bevölkerung auftritt und durch einen klinischen Verlauf mit periodischen Remissionen und Reaktivierungen gekennzeichnet ist. Im Gegensatz zum kutanen Lichen planus kann die orale Form bis zu 25 Jahre lang bestehen. Orale Läsionen können mit Läsionen der Genitalschleimhäute oder mit Läsionen des kutanen Lichen planus koexistieren. Frauen sind in einem Verhältnis von 2:3 häufiger betroffen als Männer. Bis heute gibt es keine Heilung für OLP oder sein dermales Gegenstück. Das Behandlungsziel ist immer ein zweifaches: (1) Linderung der Symptome und (2) Überwachung auf dysplastische Veränderungen. Die derzeitige OLP-Therapie zielt darauf ab, Schleimhautrötungen und -ulzerationen zu beseitigen, die Symptome zu lindern und das Mundkrebsrisiko zu verringern.
