La monografia è il risultato di un progetto intitolato Prospettive passate, presenti e future della documentazione e della conservazione delle lingue indigene. L’obiettivo principale del progetto è quello di tracciare l’evoluzione del dibattito globale sul pericolo di estinzione e sulla rinascita delle lingue e delle culture del mondo, con un focus di ricerca dedicato alla situazione nei (ex) territori britannici, dove lo status dell’inglese è un fattore importante che contribuisce alla modifica della diversità linguistica e culturale. Il libro è una raccolta di otto articoli e trattati che studiano diversi aspetti sociolinguistici relativi ai problemi della morte delle lingue, del cambiamento linguistico e della conservazione delle lingue. Attinge esempi da varie parti del mondo e dalla storia di varie lingue.
