L’handoff è probabilmente il processo più critico in termini di perdita di pacchetti e ritardi, in particolare nelle comunicazioni tra veicoli. Le reti ad hoc veicolari (VANET) devono affrontare molte sfide; in particolare, i frequenti handoff dovuti all’elevata mobilità dei veicoli rappresentano un serio fattore di limitazione delle prestazioni. In questo lavoro di ricerca viene proposta un’architettura efficiente per le VANET che tiene conto sia dei parametri di intensità del segnale ricevuto (RSS) sia delle informazioni del sistema di posizionamento globale (GPS) insieme alle mappe per la decisione di handoff. Sono incorporati moduli scanner in tutti i veicoli in grado di scansionare e interrogare i veicoli vicini per ottenere la loro direzione e velocità attraverso il GPS di bordo.
