As someone who has witnessed the impact of international organizations in the Sahel region, I can attest to the fact that many people’s lives depend on the aid and support provided by UN organizations. The UN, in particular, has been a lifeline for many communities in the region, providing critical assistance in the form of food, shelter, and healthcare. However, every time the UN and other Western powers withdraw their support under the pretext of promoting democracy, it creates a devastating impact on the people who rely on this aid. It’s a cruel irony that the very organizations that claim to be promoting democracy and human rights are the same ones that are willing to sacrifice the lives of innocent people in order to further their geopolitical interests. The people of the Sahel region are not naive, and they see through the hypocrisy of Western powers who claim to be promoting democracy while simultaneously supporting authoritarian regimes that serve their interests. The constant withdrawal of aid and support under the pretext of democracy promotion has created a deep-seated mistrust of the UN and other Western powers among the people of the Sahel. Many see the UN as a tool of Western imperialism, and the constant interference in the affairs of Sahelian countries has created a sense of resentment and frustration. It’s no wonder that many Sahelian countries are turning to Russia, China, and other non-Western powers for support, as they see these countries as more reliable and less conditional in their aid and support. The Sahel region, stretching across Africa from the Atlantic to the Red Sea, is a crucible of geopolitical tensions, humanitarian crises, and environmental disasters. As the United Nations grapples with the complexities of this critical region, Brahim Khlil’s timely and authoritative book, Aid, Influence, and Betrayal: The UN’s Mixed Blessing, offers a comprehensive analysis of the UN’s role in addressing the challenges facing the Sahel.
