Ahl-al-Bait between the Two Schools is a detailed textual study of the Prophet Muhammad’s family, examining how the designation Ahl-al-Bait is defined, what rights and distinctions are attached to it, and how questions of lineage, religious merit, and devotion have been treated across Islamic scholarly traditions.Beginning with the language of the Qur’an and Sunnah, Muhammad Salim Al-Khidr investigates the meanings of Ahl, Āl, Ahl-al-Bait, al-ʿItrah, kinship, and kindred. The work then considers the Prophet’s wives, Banū Hāshim, descendants, and other relations within the wider terminological and juristic discussions surrounding the Household. The author expressly describes his objective as documenting a moderate and balanced understanding of Ahl-al-Bait after studying differing sources and perspectives. Particular attention is given to questions with legal and theological consequences, including Zakāh, the one-fifth allocation, genealogical attribution, the relative standing of lineage and religious conduct, and the obligation to honour and love the Prophet’s family. The manuscript also examines the classical problem of ghuluw-religious excess in the attribution of qualities to revered figures-and presents material drawn from both Sunni and Twelver scholarly sources.A substantial final section explores the relationship between Ahl-al-Bait and the Companions, drawing upon Qur’anic passages, hadith literature, and reports attributed to leading members of the Prophet’s family. The book is distinguished by its extensive engagement with tafsīr, hadith, genealogy, legal discussion, and works from both Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah and the Twelver tradition. Its bibliography reflects this broad textual method. Suitable for scholars, students of Islamic studies, researchers in sectarian and intellectual history, seminary collections, and academic libraries, this volume offers a sustained study of Ahl-al-Bait within the categories, texts, and arguments of the classical Islamic tradition.
