L’agrivoltaïque est la double utilisation des terres pour la production d’énergie solaire et l’agriculture. Cette technique a été conçue pour la première fois par Adolf Goetzberger et Armin Zastrow en 1981. Panneaux solaires verticaux, orientés d’est en ouest, avec des modules bifaciaux près de Donaueschingen, en Allemagne. De nombreuses activités agricoles peuvent être combinées avec l’énergie solaire, notamment les cultures, le bétail, les serres et les plantes sauvages pour favoriser les pollinisateurs. Les systèmes agrivoltaïques peuvent inclure des panneaux solaires entre les cultures, surélevés au-dessus des cultures ou sur les serres. Les panneaux solaires aident les plantes à conserver l’humidité et à abaisser les températures, et peuvent servir d’abri aux animaux d’élevage. Les panneaux solaires bloquent la lumière, ce qui signifie que la conception des systèmes à double usage peut nécessiter des compromis entre l’optimisation du rendement et de la qualité des cultures et la production d’énergie. Certaines cultures et certains animaux d’élevage bénéficient de l’ombre accrue, ce qui atténue ou même élimine le compromis.
