Yi Mun-yol (Yongyan, Corea del Sur, 1948), desde que en 1979 publicara su primera obra, se ha ido convirtiendo en uno de los escritores coreanos contemporáneos de mayor prestigio y reconocimiento internacional. Ganador de los principales premios literarios de Corea, la mayor parte de su obra, una veintena larga de novelas y sus más notables ensayos, ha sido traducida a numerosos idiomas. La excelencia de su novela, El poeta (2000), lo consagró por la crítica internacional. Mun-yol (seudónimo que significa “pasión por la literatura”) sufrió una dolorosa infancia en una pequeña población del interior de Corea, marcada por la deserción del padre a Corea del Norte, la pobreza y el acoso policial en una turbulenta Corea posterior a la guerra de 1950. Sin embargo, pudo terminar sus estudios universitarios y llegar a ser profesor de Literatura Coreana en la Universidad de Sejong, al tiempo que se entregaba a la escritura. Excepcional narrador, profundiza con hondura en la realidad social y humana de sus protagonistas, amenazados por la angustia existencial que les provoca una progresiva pérdida de identidad.
