La guerra de África del siglo XX influyó decisivamente en el pensamiento militar español del resto del siglo. Las unidades combatientes de tropa nativa o voluntaria, unido al gran número de oficiales que pasaron por las mismas marcaron a todo el Ejército. Destacan los Regulares como fuerza principal de choque hasta la creación del Tercio. Estas unidades estrictamente militares estaban complementadas con otras fuerzas (Policía Indígena, Mehal-la, Harcas, y otras unidades menores) que desde unas misiones iniciales de apoyo o policiales pasaron a constituir también la vanguardia de diversas acciones militares. Las abundantes noticias de estas unidades sobre orgánica, actuación militar, uniformes, etc., contrastan con la escasa dedicación hacia sus mandos. Los oficiales, salvo algunos casos excepcionales y de gran notoriedad son desconocidos. Este trabajo intenta rescatarlos del olvido.
