Storytelling is mnemonic, it is far more than mere entertainment, though entertainment and moral impact are assumed to be its primary purpose. It stimulates the listener’s ability to think beyond the content and structure of a folktale and decode vital coded information. Folktale is an art of eloquence, a symbol of identity, a repository of ancient secrets, a rich memory of mankind. It gives life to inanimate object and create opportunity for the dead to meet with the living and bythe spoken word extol exploits of idiots and ridicule bravery. It also link human, animal, plant at terrestrial and celestial levels. It encapsulate a people’s philosophy, art, mythology and science in its oral form. This noble art should be sustained and studied beyond its moral and entertainment value in Africa and beyond as a cherished segment of our cultural heritage.
