拉封丹所撰写的'寓言诗'一共分为四集12卷，含有239首寓言诗。从内容上来讲，其题材大多来源于拉封丹之前时代的古代各国著名寓言家与作家们的作品，譬如伊索，费德鲁斯，贺拉斯，拉伯雷等人。他有时也会从希腊的神话和民间传说中获取灵感。值得一提的是，他在对这些素材实行再创作的时候，也同时为这些古老的故事赋予了清新的活力、时代感，甚至与当时法国社会中所发生的一些事件密切地联系在一起，也正因为如此，法国许多后来的评论家们都将他的寓言诗称作为法国十七世纪多姿多彩的社会风俗画卷。拉封丹的'寓言诗'基本上都是在吸取鲜活生动的民间语言基础上面写作而成，深入浅出，流畅自然、朗朗上口、妇孺能解，这些寓言诗在经历过几个世纪以后，所以之能够仍然继续地脍炙人口、流传不衰，不能不说这也是其极为重要的原因之一。   本译本采用的是法国Flammarion出版社于1981年印刷出版的'拉封丹寓言诗'全文版本，译文顺序与该书一致，译者只是对一些实在没有必要选中的寓言进行了个别删除，以避免浪费读者朋友们的宝贵时间。
