Partículas substanciais de metal são libertadas para a água a partir de diferentes exercícios mecânicos, por exemplo, empreendimentos de galvanoplastia, montagem de equipamentos electrónicos e fábricas de preparação de misturas. O cádmio, o cobre, o crómio, o chumbo e o zinco são, em grande medida, metais substanciais letais de utilização generalizada em numerosos empreendimentos. Cinco resíduos biológicos, por exemplo, puré de sumo de cenoura, folhas de chá, pó de madeira (serra limpa), exsudado de papel e resíduos miceliais foram testados quanto à eficácia da bio sorção e comparados com a do carvão ativado. Foi explorado o impacto do foco da biomassa, do pH e da fixação do metal na capacidade da biomassa seca para expulsar o metal do arranjo.
