Primary Socialization Theory (PST) (Oetting &Donnermeyer, 1998) posits that the peer, family, andschool environments interact to influence adolescentdrug and alcohol use. The present work is anapplication of this theory, incorporating theadditional component of negative affect (i.e.,depression and anxiety) as predictors of adolescentsubstance use and violence across Native American,Mexican American, and Anglo American males andfemales living in rural communities. Data from over65,000 rural adolescents indicates that the peergroup is a significant positive predictor ofsubstance use for all groups. Family and schoolfactors do have significant protective effectsagainst substance use, albeit indirectly moderated bypeer drug associations. Results also indicate thatsubstance use positively predicts violence for allgroups. There also appears to be a high degree ofsimilarity across cultures and gender in terms of howthese factors interact. Results from this work arediscussed in terms of implications for primaryprevention and intervention within rural settings.
