The mobile agent system is widely considered a risingand promising distributed computing paradigm;however, it also faces many challenges, which lie inthe lack of applications, security, infrastructure, and standards. On the other hand, ubiquitouscomputing (Ubicomp) based on Jini technology isbecoming the de facto paradigm of dynamic distributedsystem. This research introduces the currentdevelopment of mobile agent computing and Jinitechnology, analyzes the factors hampering fullacceptance and exploitation of mobile agents and thelimitations of Jini, and describes ongoing researchon JatWing-a Jini-enabled mobile agent computingframework using distributed enhanced tuple spaces asits underlying architecture. JatWing aims tofacilitate the practical application of mobile agenttechnology by accommodating Jini infrastructure aswell as offering easy communication andcollaboration, fault tolerance, agent tracking, anddisconnected computing mechanism. The JatWingframework consists of two network middlewares:AgentStation and AgentBase, both of which are builton commercial tuple spaces with a few lightweightdaemons at the background.
