Tout au long de la vie, les gens vivent de nombreuses transitions, mais l’une d’entre elles peut s’avérer particulièrement difficile : l’entrée dans une maison de retraite ou un établissement de soins de longue durée. De nombreuses personnes âgées vivant dans ces établissements ne le souhaitent pas, mais une dégradation de leur état de santé, des difficultés financières ou l’absence d’un système de soutien les ont amenées à s’installer dans ce nouvel environnement. Pour certaines personnes âgées, l’adaptation à un nouvel environnement peut s’avérer très difficile. En entrant dans une maison de retraite, une personne âgée peut déjà être confrontée à des situations difficiles dans sa vie, et elle doit maintenant faire face à un défi supplémentaire : s’adapter à un nouvel environnement. Pendant cette période, la personne âgée peut ressentir diverses émotions. La dépression peut être l’une de ces émotions. Cette étude a examiné les scores de dépression des personnes âgées qui ont résidé dans une maison de retraite rurale du Kansas pendant au moins un an après leur admission.
