《世说新语》是南朝刘义庆编撰的'志人小说'，主要记述汉末、三国、两晋士族阶层的言谈风尚和遗闻轶事。它真实反映了这一时代人们的风俗习惯和社会风貌，所涉及的人物上至帝王将相，下至士庶僧徒，因而成为研究这一时期历史的重要史料。本书本着故事性、趣味性和哲理性的原则，节选了《世说新语》中的部分精彩内容，以以原文、注释、译文的形式，全面而生动地还原了汉末魏晋时代的风貌。本书选录了《世说新语》中的著名篇章。内容分为原文、注释、译文四部分。其中注释着重于历史背景、人名、地名、官名，以及译文较难表达含义的词语。译文大多直接翻译，同时结合意译，少数译文不易呈现的细微涵义，则于注释中作简要说明。另外，在每篇的开端，都有对该篇内容的简要概述，以及对文章主旨的总结。
