本书不但阐述了王阳明的思想，同时还体现了他辩证的授课方法，以及生动活泼、善于用譬、常带机锋的语言艺术。因此该书一经问世，便受到士人的推崇。本书本着忠实于原注的原则，对原文进行认真核实，并把内容形式分为原文、注释、译文三部分，以便读者更加透彻地解读本书，从中获得熏陶和启迪。《传习录》是中国明代哲学家、宋明道学中心学一派的代表人物王阳明的语录和论学书信。王阳明(1472-1529)，原名云，后改名守仁，字伯安，浙江余姚人。因在绍兴会稽山阳明洞侧筑室攻读，创办阳明书院，别号阳明子，世称阳明先生。为官至南京兵部尚书，因平定'宸濠之乱'，封新建伯。著有《王文成公全集》，其中《传习录》和《大学问》是重要的哲学著作。'传习'一辞源出自《论语》中的，传不习乎'一语。《传习录》包含了王阳明的主要哲学思想，是研究王阳明思想及心学发展的重要资料。《传习录》分上、中、下三卷。卷上是王阳明讲学的语录，由徐爱、陆澄和薛侃所辑而成，卷中主要是出自王阳明亲笔的七封书信，是他晚年的著述，卷下为王阳明去世后陈九川、黄直等人提供并经钱德洪整理的语录，此部分虽未经本人审阅，但较为具体地解说了他晚年的思想，并记载了王阳明提出的'四句教'。王阳明继承了程颢和陆九渊的心学传统，并在陆九渊的基础上进一步批判了朱熹的理学。王阳明的学说以'反传统'的姿态出现，实集陆九渊以来心学之大成，并称为陆王心学。明代中期以后，阳明学派影响很大，流行到日本。
