This book arose from Dave’s PhD dissertation Acedia and its Transformation, an investigation into the nature and transformation of acedia, an ancient word referring to any combination of laziness, fearfulness and self-righteousness that blocks personal authenticity. It is Dave’s contention that these issues are both personal and also the underlying emotional angst that prevents us, as a culture, from resolving the issues of global warming as well as the other difficulties of our species.
