A presente investigação é uma tentativa de compreender a perspetiva de Sen sobre a desigualdade e alguns dos debates internos da disciplina. A análise de Sen sobre a desigualdade suscitou muitos debates, incluindo aqueles que tentaram alargar a sua noção de capacidades. Martha Nussbaum tentou articular os contributos de Sen de uma forma mais abrangente. Os responsáveis políticos encontram-se num dilema. Será que podemos defender uma posição mais coerente em que, para além do aspeto da prioridade ética, possamos também refletir sobre a forma como a abordagem das capacidades deve abordar as dimensões institucionais num contexto democrático, ao tratar as desigualdades? A ideia de capacidade assumiu uma importância central no discurso sobre o desenvolvimento. O livro aborda questões que surgem aquando da operacionalização da abordagem das capacidades. Embora Sen e Nussbaum tenham sublinhado a filosofia da abordagem das capacidades de forma distinta, ninguém discutiu em pormenor a forma de operacionalizar a abordagem das capacidades. Isto sugere que existe um debate interno que precisa de ser aprofundado. O livro pretende descobrir estas lacunas e tenta fundamentar a abordagem das capacidades na perspetiva indiana.
