'大公书信'是《雅各书》《彼得前书》《彼得后书》《约翰一书》《犹大书》这几封信的总称，也叫'普通书信'，是上帝给所有犹太人以外的基督徒的启示。对这五卷书的注释是加尔文于1542年至1551年完成的。大公书信共同论述了末世时教会与敌基督、假先知、假教师、假师傅的属灵争战，将更加白热化。加尔文神学思想的中心，就是敬虔；加尔文神学思想体系，就是一部敬虔学。字里行间无不散发出敬虔的气息，荡漾着赞美的激情，流淌着至诚的崇敬与炽热的爱慕。加尔文最为看重的是荣耀、恩典并上帝的慈悲与怜悯；他最为强调的是人的全然败坏，最为宝贵的是救恩。加尔文的'圣经注释'有两个特点：一是简洁，二是谦虚。他的目的在于尽可能准确清楚地揭示出作者的思想，对其中晦涩深奥、模糊不清的经文，竭尽全力地解释清楚，帮助人们更好地真理启示。加尔文的解经是'以经解经'，注重字句与上下文的意义，是忠诚对待圣典的垂范，从而树立了高质量圣经注释的标准，是极优秀的一套圣经注释书，即使是几百年后的今天，还是常常被最权威的圣经学者引用，具有极丰富的史料和文献价值。
