''A Visit to the United States in 1841'' is a travelogue written by Joseph Sturge, a British Quaker and abolitionist, chronicling his journey to the United States in the early 1840s. The book provides a detailed account of Sturge’s experiences and observations during his travels throughout the country, including his interactions with various individuals and groups, such as politicians, religious leaders, and slaves. Sturge’s visit occurred during a tumultuous time in American history, with tensions rising between the North and South over the issue of slavery. As an abolitionist, Sturge was particularly interested in the treatment of slaves and the efforts of the anti-slavery movement. He provides a firsthand account of the conditions of slaves he encountered and the efforts of abolitionists to help them. In addition to his observations on slavery, Sturge also writes about his impressions of American society and culture, including the political system, education, and religion. He offers a critical perspective on the country’s democratic ideals, noting the disparities between the wealthy and poor and the treatment of Native Americans. Overall, ''A Visit to the United States in 1841'' provides a unique and valuable perspective on American society and culture during a pivotal moment in its history, from the eyes of an outsider who was deeply committed to social justice and equality. One of my fellow passengers had recently been traveling in the southern States, and showed me a letter given to him as a curiosity at the post office at Charleston, South Carolina, which was addressed by a slave to her husband, but from insufficient direction had never reached its destination. It was to convey the tidings that she was about to be sold to the South, and begging him, in simple and affecting terms, to come and see her, as they would never meet again. Another of the passengers, who had also been a fellow voyager with my friend Joseph John Gurney, had recently travelled in Texas. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
