O autor propõe pensar as crises através do prisma das religiões, o que constitui um ângulo de abordagem até agora negligenciado, ou mesmo ignorado, no contexto do Senegal. Através de uma investigação empírica qualitativa cuja metodologia e epistemologia têm em conta os efeitos da crise no campo de investigação e os resultados da investigação, o autor analisa as diferentes formas como as religiões participam, mobilizando todos os recursos à sua disposição, no processo de gestão de crises em colaboração com autoridades políticas e estatais que muitas vezes se revelam limitadas na procura de soluções. Substancialmente, mostra como a sociedade senegalesa se mostra resiliente em tempos de desastres em grande escala, apoiando-se nas suas raízes religiosas. Ferramentas de mediação, poder político, comunicação e regulação social, as religiões no Senegal, longe de serem secularizadas como vemos noutros lugares, constituem um poderoso instrumento de segurança, controlo e influência no qual confiamos em momentos de crises endógenas em grande escala.
