Os hidrocarbonetos desempenham um papel de importância vital no desenvolvimento económico das nações. Como todos sabemos, a principal fonte de hidrocarbonetos é o petróleo. Os hidrocarbonetos mais prevalecentes no petróleo são mencionados, bem como alguns dos produtos que são derivados do petróleo. A análise dos hidrocarbonetos através de números esqueléticos é destacada em vez da categorização. A revelação de que as formas geométricas dos hidrocarbonetos que usamos habitualmente e que foram iniciadas por um químico alemão, August Kekule, há cerca de 160 anos, são simplesmente derivações matemáticas da teoria química dos aglomerados é altamente fenomenal. O conceito hipotético de remoção de aglomerados para gerar novos aglomerados de hidrocarbonetos está bem demonstrado. Devido à presença de uma vasta gama de várias centenas de aglomerados de hidrocarbonetos no petróleo, foi incluído outro conceito hipotético denominado teoria da mutação de aglomerados químicos de hidrocarbonetos como outra forma de os hidrocarbonetos se poderem multiplicar para gerar uma gama tão vasta de aglomerados.
