O que este livro apresenta é fruto de uma pesquisa que comecei na graduação em 2006. A continuidade da pesquisa resultou na dissertação de mestrado 'A Teoria de Mundos-Próprios de Jakob von Uexküll: Entre a Metafísica e o Naturalismo' aprovada em 2012 no Programa de Pós-graduação em Filosofia da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo. Pretendemos, a partir das investigações de Uexküll, circunscrever os principais conceitos do autor, mostrando suas consequências para a filosofia, e oferecendo uma compreensão da teoria de mundo-próprio que se mostre alternativa às diferentes interpretações filosóficas feitas até então. A abordagem que será proposta é a de que a teoria de Uexküll sustenta uma metafísica particular, mas que não se dá por algum tipo de característica especial do homem. A metafísica de Uexküll pode ser sustentada, por exemplo, a partir do tipo de vitalismo presente em sua teoria, que se aproxima de um naturalismo metafísico e de um tipo de dualismo de propriedades.
