In this book, author Baylus C. Brooks, a descendant of a Revolutionary War patriot writes about patriots of color and reflects on the contradictions of fighting for freedom while engaging in slavery. Beaufort County patriots of color and other local patriots, risked their lives in pursuit of liberty, questioning whether the new nation would extend its ideals of freedom to all citizens, regardless of race.Thomas Blango arrived in Bath Town in 1700 as an indentured servant. His journey from servitude to land ownership illustrates the struggles and achievements of free people of color in a predominantly white society. Blango’s experiences reflect the broader historical context of Bath Town’s development and the challenges faced by those seeking to establish their place in a racially divided community.Blango’s land tenure was marked by legal struggles, particularly after his death, as his family fought to maintain their property against the backdrop of a racially biased legal system. The court cases involving his descendants reveal the persistent challenges they faced in securing their rights and property ownership.Blango’s history is intertwined with the growth of Bath Town, Washington, Pantego and the surrounding areas, highlighting the contributions of people of color to the Pamlico River region and its history. His family’s story highlights the contributions of the known soldiers of color from Beaufort County, especially Israel Pearce, who served in both the Navy and Army. Their stories exemplify the sacrifices made by people of color in the fight for American independence, despite the ongoing racial discrimination they faced.Overall, the narrative emphasizes the duality of the Revolutionary War experience for free people of color, who fought valiantly for freedom while grappling with the realities of a society that often denied them basic rights. The legacy of individuals like the Blangos and Pearce serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for true equality and justice in America.
