And yet the success of his journey as a harbinger of peace depends upon forces beyond his control, inscribed in indelible unity with the story of a mysterious man and woman who were born in the deepest darkness of Vælíria’s history, in the underground caverns of the earth, prisoners of oppression and injustice. In this narrative, Hældáris and those to whom he is bound enter into an unknown land and culture, gradually penetrating to its very heart, in the hope that the darkness that festers within it may be confronted and purged, and life anew, after centuries of violence and forgetfulness, may spark into flame. For even after the collapse of the Empire thirty-five years before, the promises of a new society have proved as changing as leaves on the wind, and only a deeper confrontation of the very foundation of the shared life and history of the Vælírian people can mark a course toward a lasting future.
