Twenty-year-old Shaellyn spends her time running the Land’s End tavern, visiting with friends, and keeping her younger brother Emrys out of trouble. Everything changes when their old friend Twister arrives with news of an impending invasion. These same invaders, the Qaret Mysterium, drove Shaellyn and Emrys out of their original home country as children, separating them from their parents. The two of them have a strange immunity to the magical brainwashing used by the Mysterium, as do some of their friends. The children escaped during the chaos of the initial takeover and headed south. With Twister’s help, they survived long enough to make it to Raqut, the city where they’ve lived for the past ten years. The other survivors of the first attack flee from Raqut to the surrounding jungle and use guerilla tactics against the Mysterium. Shaellyn hatches a plan to take the enemy down from the inside, then puts it into action with the help of her brother and her best friend Laina. While working in the occupied city, they discover the Mysterium’s greatest weakness: memories stolen from the people of every conquered country, being stored inside an enchanted crystal. If the spell on the crystal is broken, everyone’s memories will return, giving them a chance to take back their home.
