Who are we? What did we derive from? Where are we going? Have we specifically, as human beings, been endowed with purpose by a benevolent Creator? Or are we merely a collection of cells randomly occasioned by accident? To disagree over existential questions is understandable-to ignore them is unforgivable! If our contemporary, secular world has been so successful at molding and provisioning society, why do so many people ardently seek outlets that offer faith, hope, and love? Does scientific inquiry answer humanity's most enduring questions? A scientific approach toward explaining our global reality is the best method to determine how things function; but a more philosophical approach is better suited to characterize their purpose. Within this collection of poems, I attempt to qualify the purpose of how things interact and operate, within our world, focusing on the human environment. Poems that aspire to seek a more philosophical course of life. To look beyond the obvious, elementary explanations of reality and delve into mysteries that abound all about us. To challenge modern dogmas, in an attempt to show that western, classical doctrine still merits our attention.Within A Scribe's Parchment, I endeavor to ask more questions, than to provide answers, because life is characterized by mystery. I seek rather than explain, because life is an odyssey. My aim is to question faulty ideas and ideals and hopefully, offer alternative and more traditional perspectives on reality. Perspectives that favor Judeo-Christian principles rather than denying them nor explaining them away. Conventional wisdom asserts that we should conform to a social cadence, where elitist (secular-humanist) remedies are the best path forward toward progress. Whereas, the philosophy I advocate is grounded in "truth and common sense;" because, veritably, truth is common sense and vice versa. Clearly, the virtuous path remains the best path forward-and hopefully, leads one toward eternal happiness with God.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...
