O dia 7 de janeiro de 1979 tem sido, sem dúvida, a data mais controversa da história do Camboja, tanto para os políticos como para os civis cambojanos. Para alguns, a data significa a libertação do povo cambojano do regime genocida dos Khmer Vermelhos, que matou cerca de 2 milhões de pessoas entre 1975 e 1979. Para outros, no entanto, a data assinala a invasão do exército vietnamita no Camboja, após a qual o país ficaria sob ocupação vietnamita durante uma década inteira, antes da sua retirada final em setembro de 1989. Este livro junta-se a este debate, mas fá-lo ultrapassando a retórica política simplificada de 'libertação' vs. 'invasão' e explorando as complexidades da sociedade cambojana sob a República Popular do Kampuchea (PRK), apoiada pelos vietnamitas.
