Além disso, a qualidade do vínculo entre mãe e filho na infância desempenha um papel importante na experiência da intimidade na idade adulta. Um vínculo seguro na primeira infância pode proteger contra o desenvolvimento de psicopatologias mais tarde na vida, mesmo que tenham ocorrido experiências traumáticas ao longo da vida. Mais pesquisas devem investigar exaustivamente a interação entre traumas infantis, estilos de vínculo e intimidade. Isso nos permitirá compreender melhor as dificuldades que pessoas com experiências traumáticas na infância enfrentam em relação à intimidade.
