Muitos factores, o mais importante dos quais é a educação escolar, influenciam tradicionalmente o sucesso social. Atualmente, porém, a prosperidade material preconizada pelo desenvolvimento da ciência e da tecnologia no mundo moderno tende a sobrepor-se à educação moral. O objetivo desta investigação é promover a educação moral. Como promover a educação moral entre os alunos do Benim na sua busca de sucesso social material? Utilizando uma abordagem qualitativa e baseando-se nas técnicas de observação dos factos no seu ambiente natural e de entrevistas (entrevistas semi-dirigidas) com inspectores e conselheiros pedagógicos, esta investigação está profundamente enraizada na teoria moral de Émile Durkheim. Os resultados mostram o primado da procura frenética de facilidades materiais precoces sobre a moral em qualquer empreendimento educativo, devido à visão demasiado benevolente da opinião pública em relação ao ambiente material prevalecente. Esta situação explica o carácter árido do processo de ensino/aprendizagem atual e coloca novos desafios.
