Temos que tomar muitas decisões que exigem resolução de problemas regularmente, quer percebamos isso ou não. É importante ser capaz de resolver problemas de forma eficaz, em situações da vida real, mas especialmente em matemática. Em 2007, o Departamento de Educação do Mississippi produziu um conjunto de objetivos matemáticos para alunos do terceiro ao quinto ano. Esses objetivos usam a expressão resolução de problemas, sem definir o seu uso na sala de aula de matemática. Para descobrir o que os professores de matemática estavam realmente a fazer na sala de aula, este estudo utilizou um inquérito online válido, administrado através do Qualtrics. A pesquisa se concentrou em determinar a definição de problema dos professores do terceiro ao quinto ano, suas crenças sobre resolução de problemas e as estratégias de resolução de problemas que eles usavam ao ensinar os alunos. Os resultados deste estudo demonstraram que a resolução de problemas certamente deve ser mais examinada nas escolas em todo o Mississippi e mais implementada na sala de aula.
