O livro começa com uma homenagem ao grande antropólogo de San Diego Marcel Hénaff, recentemente falecido, e uma recensão das suas duas grandes obras: Le prix de la vérité e Le don des philosophes, ambas publicadas pelas Editions du Seuil em 2002 e 2012. O objetivo deste ensaio era 'repensar a reciprocidade', num espírito de sinceridade e com base nesta definição de filosofia: uma série de atitudes de pensamento em relação às pessoas e ao mundo. A minha primeira questão diz respeito ao carácter estático do pensamento, desde as sociedades tradicionais e a filosofia dos presocráticos até ao regresso do movimento e do fluxo na época contemporânea, com Whitehead, Bergson e Deleuze. Como reencontrar a força essencial do movimento contínuo, que transformava as formas 'fixas' entre as quais vibrava em pólos de importância secundária? Em segundo lugar, como é possível que a agitação que afectou o pensamento da época tenha deixado apenas vestígios mínimos no curso pacífico que a Filosofia nos parece ter tomado? Estou a tentar mostrar que o espírito de dominação e de acumulação individual, as puras antíteses da reciprocidade, foram os seus coveiros.
