A Queer Book is a collection of short stories and essays written by The Ettrick Shepherd, a Scottish poet and novelist, and first published in 1832. The book contains a mix of genres, including romantic, gothic, and supernatural tales, as well as satirical essays on contemporary politics, religion, and society. Many of the stories feature queer or unconventional characters and themes, such as a cross-dressing woman who disguises herself as a man to join the army, a young man who falls in love with a ghost, and a group of witches who hold a sabbath in a remote Scottish glen. The book also includes several poems and songs, some of which celebrate same-sex love and desire.Despite its controversial subject matter, A Queer Book was well-received by critics and readers at the time of its publication, and is now considered an important work in the history of queer literature. The book’s blend of humor, romance, and social commentary continues to captivate modern readers, making it a fascinating glimpse into the cultural attitudes and literary styles of early 19th-century Scotland. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
