It centres around Adam Melfort, a man who weds a young and beautiful socialite that does not return his love. After she forges her wealthy uncle’s signature on a cheque, Melfort takes the blame in an attempt to save her family’s name. He is subsequently jailed and loses his army commission in the process. When he is released from prison during World War One, he is recruited as an undercover agent behind enemy lines in Belgium, later heading an expedition to Greenland to rescue a wealthy American millionaire explorer whose own expedition has met disaster.John Buchan (1875 – 1940) was a Scottish historian, novelist, and politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the 15th since Canadian Confederation. He was vocal advocate of literacy and the development of Canadian culture, receiving a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the Britain. Other notable works by this author include: “The African Colony” (1903) and “The Moon Endureth” (1912).
