O estudo propõe um exame da função simbólica nos primeiros trabalhos do filósofo francês MauriceMerleau-Ponty (1908-61), tentando abordar, mais especificamente, o papel dela no livro “A estrutura do comportamento”, publicado em 1942, e na sua retomada crítica dentro da “Fenomenologia da Percepção”, de 1945. Segundo o autor, o tema, pouco explicitado pelo próprio filósofo, também é objeto de raros debates entre seus comentadores, embora a sua importância na obra de Merleau-Ponty seja inegável.No primeiro trabalho, Merleau-Ponty, utilizando-se das categorias simbólicas emprestadas da neuropsisquiatria do começo do século XX, caracteriza a corporalidade humana como a capacidade de ultrapassar o caráter imediato das situações vividas. A própria atividade humana, assim, redimensionaria a existência concreta que se denota também, por exemplo, no comportamento animal.Já na “Fenomenologia da percepção”, em que o filósofo trata da espacialidade, da motricidade e da expressividade do corpo próprio, Merleau-Ponty prescinde das explicações calcadas na função simbólica, doravante associadas à análises de cunho intelectualista, embora continue a combater o que considera representar uma autonomia crescente da idealização simbólica na dinâmica entre conteúdo e forma.
