Finding scholarly research on the choral music bysignificant American composers is limited. Moreover, finding scholarly resources by significantAfrican-American composers is more limited. Spiritualarrangements by well-known African-American composershad a tremendous impact upon the cultural developmentof African-Americans in North America. Equally, butnot always noted, are the contributions byAfrican-American composers of the western Europeantradition. The purpose of this book is three-fold: 1)to provide a scholarly resource devoted to themusical contributions of Pulitzer Prize winner GeorgeWalker; 2) to present his choral works in the form ofa descriptive analysis; and 3) to provide a summaryof his career as a performer, conductor, teacher, andcomposer. Chapter One introduces the composer andbriefly discusses the need for continued research inthis area. Chapter Two provides a Black perspectiveon twentieth century classical music. Chapter Threeexplores Walker’s life. Chapters Four and Five aredevoted to the musical analysis of his choral works.Chapter Six summarizes and reflects upon the life, choral works, and accomplishments of George Walker.
