Jesus apresenta três metáforas sobre a oração: pedir, buscar e bater. A primeira palavra ('peçam', gr. aiteite) significa orar com um senso de dependência. É usado pela pessoa que chega de mãos vazias, e diz 'Não tenho com que comprar'. Jesus nunca orou dessa forma, ou seja, como alguém muito pobre. Mas é assim que devemos pedir ao Pai, como indigentes e necessitados de tudo. A segunda palavra ('busquem', gr. zêteite) encerra a ideia de cuidado ou preocupação e caracteriza a ansiedade ansiosa, ou seja, devemos orar sob urgência de um grande desejo ou expectativa. Uma terceira palavra ('batam' gr. kroúete) envolve as ideias de dependência e esforço que as outras duas comunicam. É a melhor expressão do adágio popular, que diz: 'Fé em Deus e mãos à obra. Estas, são, as três regras básicas de uma oração correta e eficaz: a persistência. Nunca devemos esperar que seremos atendidos logo na primeira de nossas petições , Jesus nos mandou ser insistentes
