Jesus apresenta três metáforas sobre a oração: pedir, buscar e bater. A primeira palavra ('pedir', grego: aiteite) significa orar com sentimento de dependência. É usado por quem chega de mãos vazias e diz: 'Não tenho nada para comprar'. Jesus nunca rezou assim, ou seja, como alguém muito pobre. Mas é assim que devemos pedir ao Pai, desamparado e necessitado de tudo. A segunda palavra ('buscar', grego: zêteite) contém a ideia de cuidado ou preocupação e caracteriza a ansiedade ansiosa, ou seja, devemos orar sob a urgência de um grande desejo ou expectativa. Uma terceira palavra (do grego 'bater': kroúete) implica as ideias de dependência e esforço que as outras duas comunicam. É a melhor expressão do ditado popular que diz: 'Fé em Deus e mãos à obra.
