In the spring of 1905, Johnny Cook is twenty years old - the steadiest son of a farming family outside Detroit, a young man who fixes things, keeps his word, and plans to marry Harley Mason just as soon as he has earned the right to ask. One night he falls asleep in 1905 and wakes on a bench in Washington DC, a hundred and twenty years into the future. He does not panic. He finds work, finds shelter with an elderly woman named Hattie Washington who asks no questions she does not need answered, and spends a year learning the shape of the world that is coming - the wars, the costs, the disasters - reading everything, watching everything, and carrying it all quietly. Then a young woman named Dakota sits beside him at the Reflecting Pool and tells him about a photograph on her mother’s dresser. A young man named John Cook, taken around 1905, with eyes that look like he is carrying something nobody else can see. Like he has already seen what the rest of the world has not seen yet.Johnny understands, in that moment, that Dakota exists because he goes home.He goes home. He marries Harley. He earns a university degree, enters civic planning, and helps shape the city of Detroit through the automobile age - all while carrying inside him the full weight of a century of history he cannot change and cannot share. He watches the First World War come and go. He quietly steers his youngest son, Thomas, toward the Marine Corps before the Second World War begins, because he already knows what Thomas is going to be asked to do, and he wants him ready. The years settle over the family like something earned. Harley’s hair goes silver and her eyes do not change. Grandchildren fill the house. Johnny is in his office at sixty, still thinking clearly, still grateful for every ordinary day - because no one in the world knows better than he does how rare ordinary days are.In the epilogue, told through Hattie’s eyes in October of 2025, she goes to his room and finds his bed neatly made, his clothes folded on the chair, and two envelopes on the desk. She reads his letter three times. Then she folds it, puts it in her pocket, and goes to make coffee - because she has been expecting this for a long time, and she knows how to wait.A Night a Hundred Years Long is a story about a man who lives his entire life with perfect foreknowledge of history and imperfect knowledge of the people he loves - and who chooses the people every time.
