No século XIX, supostos argumentos científicos tinham como objetivo compreender as sociedades humanas e suas diferenças. Travestidos de teses objetivas e de verdades absolutas, preconceitos sociais, raciais e de gênero não apenas eram afirmados nas Universidades, mas utilizados como bases de políticas públicas e de Estado. O racismo, parte importante da ideologia colonial, é uma destas mais famosas ideologias.Não menos impactante, porém, foi a busca de definir as diferenças de gênero a partir de bases biologicistas. Cesare Lombroso, famoso criminologista italiano que acreditava poder identificar um criminoso nato a partir de caracteres físicos exteriores, une-se nesta obra a Guglielmo Ferrero para produzir um discurso supostamente científico sobre a inferioridade biológica da mulher diante do homem.Nesta obra, o gênero feminino é visto como quase um ser à parte: frágil, pouco racional, dado às emoções, histórico, tinha uma construção biológica que impossibilitava às mulheres de competir intelectualmente com homens. Melhor seria para elas, portanto, render-se ao determinismo de sua biologia, e realizarem-se no ambiente doméstico.A prostituta, por sua vez se equiparava ao selvagem como um dos mais baixos exemplos da espécie humana. Para Lombroso e Ferrero, a prostituição não seria resultado de condição social, mas de distúrbios biológicos que poderiam ser identificados por traços como tamanho do queixo, posição dos olhos, construção das orelhas. A prostituta, mais do que o homem criminoso, era, nesta visão, uma degenerada.A obra é de 1893, mas sua busca por legitimar uma divisão de gêneros a partir de argumentos biológicos ainda ecoa em nossa sociedade.
