A mobilidade elétrica nas décadas de 1970 e 1980 - o renascimento de uma visão e o seu fracasso na realidade pretende responder à questão de por que razão o carro elétrico, em particular o carro elétrico de passageiros, não conseguiu evoluir gradualmente de um produto de nicho para um produto de massa no contexto da narrativa social e política motivada pela proteção ambiental e pela crise energética. Para isso, será analisada primeiro a utilização do carro elétrico na viragem do século, a fim de poder tirar conclusões sobre o seu desenvolvimento nas décadas de 1970 e 1980 e identificar padrões. Outra parte do trabalho abordará os fatores tecnológicos do fracasso da mobilidade elétrica. Além da apresentação exemplar de alguns veículos conceituais e de série, a atenção principal será dada ao subsistema das baterias de tração, uma vez que este, mais do que qualquer outro subcomponente técnico, foi determinante para o sucesso ou fracasso do carro elétrico (CE). Além disso, o trabalho aborda o contexto social, político e económico em que a viabilidade da mobilidade elétrica foi renegociada na década de 1970.
