Os debates na história da filosofia projetam sobre a filosofia de Newton certa dificuldade em organizar e até mesmo interpretar os conteúdos no que se refere à filosofia newtoniana. As obras de Newton suscitaram demandas acerca da sua filosofia já entre os pensadores modernos. As questões em torno da filosofia newtoniana não se limitaram, evidentemente, ao seu tempo. Hoje ainda se pergunta: “seria Newton um filósofo metafísico?”. É claro que esta questão não imprime uma perspectiva de tentar responder se Newton era físico ou filósofo. Porém,trata-se de provocar uma reflexão sobre as perspectivas metafísicas inerentes ao programa científico newtoniano, fazendo emergir questões peculiares e adjacentes à sua ciência: quais seriam os princípios da filosofia metafísica que Newton adotou para si em meio às suas investigações científicas?; quais são os elementos que permitem fundamentar um programa filosófico e metafísico em Newton?; o pensador inglês seguiu uma filosofia nos moldes da tradição da modernidade ou ele impôs uma perspectiva peculiar à sua filosofia? Nesta obra, o autor buscou percorrer o programa filosófico de Newton diante da sua física e procurou trazer outras perspectivas para uma metafísica emergente e necessária à compreensão da sua física. Assim, ele retoma a leitura do Escólio Geral dos Principia, obra maior de Newton, e propõe um diálogo com as teses metafísicas de René Descartes, considerado o pai da Metafísica Moderna. 10
