Lucêncio, filho de um rico comerciante de Pisa, chega a Pádua para estudar na universidade, mas logo se apaixona por Bianca, filha caçula de um rico mercador e que já tem dois pretendentes. Batista Minola, o pai de Bianca, decide que ela só se casará depois da filha mais velha, Catarina, que é considerada uma megera e, por isso, não tem nenhum pretendente.
